AFRS 100 - Introduction to Africana Studies Semester Offered: Spring

The course proposes an overview of the field of Africana Studies, emphasizing the historical and cultural connections between Africa and its diaspora. Articulated on distinct geographical spaces and historical time periods, it focuses on the consciousness that emerges from the resistance of African peoples and their descendants. The course develops a multidisciplinary approach to understanding slavery, colonialism, nationalism, and transnationalism from a pan-African perspective. Readings focus on W.E.B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells, Howard Thurman, Marcus Garvey, Aimé Césaire, Frantz Fanon, Malcolm X, James Baldwin, Huey Newton, Edward Said, and Angela Davis, among others. The particular subjects and themes explored vary with each faculty teaching the course. Diane Harriford.
