HIST 357 - The First World War

1 unit(s)
For many, the First World War marks the beginning of the modern age.  After examining the debate about the conflict’s causes, this seminar takes the social and cultural history of the war as its subject.  Topics include the methods of mechanized trench warfare, the soldiers’ experience, the effects of the total war on the home front, and the memory of the Great War in film and literature. The primary focus is on European combatants, but we also explore the role of colonial troops and the impact of the war on European empires. Lydia Murdoch.

One 2-hour period.

Not offered in 2024/25.
