ENGL 350 - Studies in Eighteenth-century British Literature

1 unit(s)
(Same as MEDS 350 ) Focuses on a broad literary topic, with special attention to works of the Restoration and eighteenth century.

The Origins of Periodical Literature. A study of British and American periodical literature mainly from the 17th to the 19th century, but looking forward to the present, with special attention to typography, layout, format, distribution, and reception. The class investigates, for example, how a periodical publication attracts and shapes a community of readers and in what ways it changes norms of literary expression. Classes meet in Special Collection where we examine first editions of the periodicals under review. Students devise individual projects making use of these primary sources. Robert DeMaria.
