DANC 276 - Hip Hop Dance

Semester Offered: Spring
0.5 unit(s)
The proposal is to offer an intermediate-level Hip Hop dance course, where students learn and master the different elements that make up Hip Hop dance. Developed in New York City, Hip Hop dance encompasses a wide range of street styles including breaking, locking and popping. The class covers all of the basic elements of this style and introduces students to the latest street/urban dance moves. Hip Hop dance and Hip Hop music were developed by inner-city African and Latinx Americans in the Bronx in the 1970s. It has since entered the mainstream dance culture and is performed all over the world.  A unique way of moving, Hip Hop dance classes complement the offerings of the Dance Department’s Ballet, Jazz and Modern courses thus broadening the diversity and range of styles offered to the Vassar dance students. It is available as another resource for the student choreographers on campus as they continue to develop their unique choreographic voice and vocabulary.  Unlike the other courses in the Dance Department curriculum, Hip Hop emerged entirely from the culture of people of color and as such refelcts Vassar College’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Julian Llanos.
