ART 281 - Histories of Photography

Semester Offered: Spring
1 unit(s)
Our contemporary lives are unimaginable without the photograph, but the medium has existed in–and profoundly shaped–our cultural environment for less than two centuries. This course examines photography from its inception to the current digital age, interrogating its intersection with diverse intellectual spheres. From pictures made in artistic, scientific, and journalistic frameworks—to the many that blur boundaries—we explore how the photograph has structured, embodied, and at times challenged, social thought and realities. Emily Voelker.

Open to all classes.

Two 75-minute periods.
