FILM 181 - Guns/Media/Violence

Semester Offered: Fall
1 unit(s)
What accounts for high firearm ownership in the U.S.? What are the histories of the pro-gun and anti-gun lobby groups? How have the federal government and the states regulated guns? What are the connections between various forms of media (primarily fictional movies and tv, but also video games and news) and cultural attitudes? What have psychologists learned about the causes of violence? These questions animate our semester as we analyze movies and television shows, read scholarship and journalism, and watch the contemporary debate unfold in American society. Sarah Kozloff.

Open only to first-year students; satisfies college requirement for a First-Year Writing Seminar.

Two 75-minute periods, plus outside screenings.
