GEOG 372 - Topics in Human Geography

Semester Offered: Fall
1 unit(s)
Topic 2024/25a: Environmental Governance: A Political Ecological Approach. (Same as ENST 372 ) This seminar explores how non-state actors engage in environmental governance. These actors work in collaboration with, or at times beyond, the states at different geographical scales, to transform environmental policy and practices.  Examples include community-based and participatory governance, environmental NGO groups, third-party certification, corporate social responsibility goals, and green investment strategies. The course critically evaluates the political economic dynamics and ecological implications of environmental governance structures in North America and beyond, including questions of decolonization, neoliberalism, “green” dispossession, and shifting relations of sovereignty. Ryan Hackett.

One 3-hour period.

Course Format: CLS
