ART 382 - Belle Ribicoff Seminar

Semester Offered: Spring
0.5 unit(s)
Topic for 2017/18b: Contemporary Issues in Curatorial Practice. What is the museum curator’s work in the 21 st  century? How do collection caretakers interpret and present art, and for whom do they do it? This seminar explores the ways in which longstanding museum collections have recently been problematized and re-contextualized, and also considers what their future might be.  Through case studies across a wide array of specialized fields, students are asked to engage in the practices of ”finding” exhibitions in permanent collections and proposing strategic acquisitions. They are asked to debate the benefits and pitfalls of deaccessioning, the needs and perils of redefining collection priorities, and the ethical and social imperatives for reconfiguring the missions of museums. In a session to be held in New York City, two leading curators present and discuss their ideas on engagement with communities and responses to protest. Museum visits are required. Teresa Carbone.

Prerequisite(s): permission of the Chair of the Art Department.

Second six-week course.

One 2-hour period.
