ART 220 - Cathedral, Castle, City, Cloister: the Architecture of the Middle Ages

A survey of the greatest moments in Western, Byzantine and Islamic architecture from the reign of Constantine to the late middle ages and the visual, symbolic and structural language developed by the masters and patrons responsible for them. Particular attention is paid to issues of representation: the challenge of bringing a medieval building into the classroom, that of translating our impressions of these buildings into words and images, and the ways in which other students and scholars have done so. Prerequisite(s): ART 105  or ART 106 , coursework in Medieval Studies, or permission of instructor.

Two 75-minute periods.
